May is, without a doubt, the best month to visit the Andalusian city of Cordoba. For its Festival of Balcones and Corners, in which the courtyards and white facades are dyed in color with hundreds of flowers, for the festival of the Crosses of May and for the good atmosphere that permeates the streets. We invite you to discover these and other must-sees of this magical city.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, the Mosque of Cordoba is a work of art in itself. This architectural hybrid, which has gone from being a temple of Islamic worship to a Christian cathedral, has undergone several extensions over the years, such as that of Almanzor – who gave it a military character – which have enriched it. Impressive are the Mihrab, inside the qibla wall, the Gothic style Main Chapel and the Royal Chapel with a Mudejar style decoration. Note: if you go from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m. you can visit it for free.
This fortress-palace keeps in its interior centuries of history, Roman, Visigoth and Arab remains, among others, exposed in different rooms. All this is articulated around beautiful Mudejar style gardens decorated with leafy trees, aromatic herbs and flowers, many flowers. It also highlights its collection of Roman mosaics, taken from the Plaza de la Corredera, the tower of the Lions, a perfect place to take an excellent panoramic view of the city and the pagan sarcophagus, from the first quarter of the third century, which is exhibited in one of its rooms.
Located over the Guadalquivir River, the Roman bridge of Cordoba is pure history. For 20 centuries this structure of 16 arches -17 in its beginnings- and 331 m long was the only bridge the city had. Films such as the Spanish film Carmen or series such as the successful Game of Thrones have used this construction, which links the Campo de la Verdad neighborhood with the Cathedral, as the setting for some of its most famous scenes.
Strolling through the Jewish quarter of Cordoba is to take a trip back in time and be perplexed by the beauty of its streets and facades. In the heart of the city, not far from the Mosque, highlights include the Calle de los Judíos with the Casa Andalusí, the Synagogue and the Casa de la Memoria, the Plaza de Tiberiades presided over by a statue of Maimonides – one of the most important doctors and philosophers of al-Andalus born in this neighborhood – and the Calle de Tomás Conde. Between visits you can stop for a drink in one of its many bars to taste its gastronomy, with its rich salmorejo at the top of the list.
It is here where the coming and going of its people takes place, a meeting point to have a coffee under the sun in one of its terraces or to enjoy its festivities such as Carnival or the White Night of Flamenco. It is believed that long ago this place, which also served as a bullring, occupied part of the Roman circus of the city. Its design and structure are unique in Andalusia and are reminiscent of the great Castilian plazas.
May is the month of flowers, vibrant colors, terraces and pleasant walks. Every year, the city of Cordoba decorates its facades with more than 2500 geraniums and gitanillas to celebrate the Festival de Balcones y los Rincones, a unique event that is accompanied by various cultural and leisure activities, such as tastings of typical products, meetings of rocieros choirs and photography contests.
